After the family-specific whole genome duplication (WGD) in the Oligocene (about 30 million years ago), the diversification of the mustard family (Brassicaceae) began, leading to today’s enormous morphological and ecological diversity of its 4000 species. In some clades, however, one or more younger WGDs occurred independently. Today, we are unearthing these mesopolyploid events and beginning to understand their evolutionary significance.
