While flowering plants frequently undergo whole-genome duplication, the pathways and consequences of post-polyploid diploidization remain poorly understood. Here, we sequenced and assembled eight Biscutella genomes of different size (0.6 to 1.1 Gb) and chromosome number (n = 6, 8 and 9). An estimated 12 million-year diploidization of the allotetraploid genome (n = 14) was accompanied by independent descending dysploidy to n = 9, 8 and 6. We identified clades of early-diverging (n = 8/6) and late-diverging (n = 9) genomes that exhibit convergent and divergent features, highlighting the role of chromosomal rearrangements in genome evolution.
